This type of bilum is often referred to as a 'baby bilum' as it has an adjustable strap which knots together to accommodate different loads.
The version made from acrylic comes in a variety of vibrant colours and patterns. These are found in the Highlands regions of PNG, although they are popular and made throughout the country.
As each bilum is unique and one-of-a-kind the colours and patterns of each bilum may vary slightly from the images.
This bilum was made by the "Hagen Handicraft Group" an all women self help initiative, supported by the Baptist Union, which includes a high proportion of mothers living with HIV/AIDS in their families and communities.
These women have gone through and are still trying to deal with the immense struggles and difficulties in their lives. Their current situation includes poverty, family violence, drugs, prostitution, tribal fighting and the increasing rise of HIV/AIDS. In the midst of these troubles the women's primary motivations are to have decent food on the table for their families at the end of each day and to send their children to school.
Has endless uses, but would be perfect for use as a beach bag to hold multiple towels, or to carry groceries. This bilum is washable.
Approximate dimensions are: 80cm wide by 80cm high.
